What is included in a birth chart?
A birth chart combines several different ideas used in astrology. The planets and luminaries describe the celestial bodies being considered; the zodiac signs are the twelve sign divisions used by a particular astrological system; the houses divide the chart into twelve areas; and aspects describe angular relationships between chart points. An interpretation usually considers these pieces together rather than relying on one placement alone.
Astrological traditions are not all identical. Western tropical astrology and sidereal systems, for example, use different reference points for assigning zodiac signs. Two calculators may therefore display different signs or degrees even when the birth details look the same. Check the system and settings before comparing results.
In this guide
1. Planets and luminaries
In astrology, the Sun and Moon are commonly included alongside planets. Each is assigned symbolic themes within the tradition. The following descriptions are broad examples, not fixed definitions of a person:
- Sun: often associated with identity, vitality or a central sense of self.
- Moon: often associated with feelings, habits or inner responses.
- Mercury: commonly linked with communication and thinking.
- Venus: commonly linked with affection, aesthetics and preferences.
- Mars: commonly linked with action, drive and assertion.
- Jupiter and Saturn: often interpreted through themes such as growth, structure, responsibility and limits.
These associations vary by school and by the full chart interpretation. Avoid reading a single placement as a complete description of someone's character or future.
2. Zodiac signs
A zodiac sign is the sign assigned to a chart point under a particular zodiac system. Popular astrology often groups signs into elements, fire, earth, air and water, and qualities such as cardinal, fixed and mutable. These are classification frameworks used by astrologers; they are not scientific categories of people.
The phrase “Sun sign” usually refers to the sign assigned to the Sun. The Moon sign refers to the Moon's placement. The Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the sign on the eastern horizon at the birth moment and place. These three labels describe different chart factors, so they should not be used interchangeably.

3. Houses and aspects
Many chart layouts divide the wheel into twelve houses. Astrologers interpret houses as different areas of life, but the exact house boundaries can depend on the house system and the chart settings. Because house placement is sensitive to birth time and location, an uncertain birth time can make house-based interpretations unreliable.
Aspects are angular relationships between planets or other chart points. Astrologers may interpret certain angles as harmonious, tense or otherwise significant. The selected aspect types and allowable angle ranges, often called orbs, vary between approaches. If a site does not explain its settings, treat its aspect interpretation as one framework rather than the only possible reading.
4. Why birth time and location matter
Birth date anchors the chart to a calendar day. Birth time helps determine the local sky orientation and is especially important for the Ascendant and house cusps. Birthplace provides the geographic coordinates, while the applicable local time-zone and daylight-saving rules help convert recorded local time into a time standard used by the calculation.
Errors in a time-zone assumption, daylight-saving rule, location choice or birth-time entry can change results. A location search may also select a different town with the same name. If the calculator offers a city or time-zone choice, check that it matches the actual birthplace and date.
If the exact birth time is unknown, do not enter a guessed time and assume the Ascendant or houses are precise. You can still learn about chart concepts, but mark time-sensitive results as uncertain. The Astrology & Birth Chart tools page explains which details the available calculators use.
5. A careful way to approach a chart
- Check the inputs. Confirm the date, local birth time, birthplace and any time-zone details you supplied.
- Check the system. Note whether the calculator uses tropical or sidereal zodiac settings and what other conventions it documents.
- Read the method. Look for an explanation of how positions are calculated and which parts are interpretive.
- Consider the whole context. Do not treat a single sign, planet or aspect as a complete reading.
- Keep your judgement. Use interpretations as cultural, spiritual or entertainment-oriented reflection, not as instructions for major life decisions.

6. Common mistakes and limitations
- Mixing systems: comparing a tropical result with a sidereal result without noting the difference.
- Guessing the birth time: treating time-sensitive placements as exact despite uncertainty.
- Assuming all calculators use the same settings: ephemeris, coordinates, house systems and rounding may differ.
- Taking symbolic descriptions literally: astrology interpretations are not diagnoses, evidence of compatibility, or guaranteed forecasts.
- Sharing unnecessary personal information: enter only the details a tool needs, and review the site's privacy policy if you have questions about data handling.
Astrology should not replace professional medical, legal, financial or mental-health advice. A chart cannot establish what another person thinks, guarantee a relationship outcome or determine what will happen in the future.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a birth chart and a horoscope?
A birth chart usually refers to a chart calculated for a particular date, time and location. “Horoscope” can mean a chart interpretation or a forecast written for a sign or period, depending on context.
Do I need my exact birth time?
An exact time is particularly important for the Ascendant and houses. Some planetary placements may be less sensitive over a short period, but a placement near a sign boundary can still require careful timing. Check the specific calculator's notes.
Why do two birth chart calculators disagree?
They may use different zodiac systems, house systems, time-zone handling, location coordinates, astronomical data or rounding rules. Compare their documented settings before deciding whether there is an error.
Are birth chart interpretations scientifically proven?
No. The positions used to construct a chart can be calculated, but the personality meanings and predictions assigned by astrology are not established scientific conclusions.
Can a birth chart predict my future or relationship outcome?
No chart can guarantee a future event or relationship outcome. Interpretations should be treated as belief-based reflection or entertainment, not as a substitute for evidence, communication or professional guidance.
