Astrology through your birth time and place
Rising Sign Calculator
This free rising sign calculator works out your Ascendant, the zodiac sign that was rising over the eastern horizon when you were born. To keep the rising sign calculator honest, it needs your exact birth time, birthplace and time zone, and it shows how much a few minutes of error could change the answer rather than guessing missing details.

Your Rising sign result
A symbolic interpretation
Remember: this is an astrology interpretation for curiosity and self-reflection, not a scientific personality assessment or a prediction of your future.
How this was calculated
How to use the Rising Sign Calculator
- Enter your date of birth and your birth time on a 24-hour clock. The time needs to be as exact as your records allow.
- Choose your birthplace from the city list. Latitude, longitude and time zone are filled in for you. For any other place, choose “Other place” and enter the coordinates.
- Check the time zone. Change it if your birthplace followed a different zone or offset on your birth date.
- Pick Tropical (Western) or Sidereal (Vedic Lagna with Lahiri ayanamsa).
- Select Find my Rising sign, then read the result, the warnings and the birth-time sensitivity table.
What is a Rising sign?
Your Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the moment and place you were born. People often ask “what is my rising sign?” after hearing that it describes first impressions. In astrology it is traditionally linked with the outward manner you show when meeting someone, and it also sets the starting point for the twelve houses of the chart.
Because the Earth turns once a day, all twelve signs rise in turn within about 24 hours. That makes the Rising sign the quickest-changing part of a birth chart, and the part most sensitive to a small error in birth time. The geometry is exact; the meanings attached to it are a symbolic tradition, not a scientifically established description of personality.
Method and formula used
This tool calculates the Ascendant directly from astronomy rather than from a lookup table.
Step 1: Convert local birth time to UTC using the time zone you selected, including daylight saving in force on that date.
Step 2: Convert UTC to a Julian Day and work out Greenwich mean sidereal time.
Step 3: Add your longitude (east positive) to get the local sidereal time, which is the right ascension of the Midheaven.
Step 4: Calculate the Ascendant: tan(Asc) = cos(LST) ÷ −(sin(LST) × cos ε + tan φ × sin ε), where ε is the obliquity of the ecliptic and φ is your latitude. The correct quadrant is taken from the signs of the numerator and denominator.
Step 5: Divide the longitude by 30° to find the sign. For the sidereal option, subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa first.
The result is the Ascendant of a geometric chart. It does not depend on the choice of house system, because Placidus, Whole Sign and others all start from the same Ascendant (they differ in how the other houses are divided).
Worked example: 24 August 1990, 14:30 in Karachi
Karachi used UTC+05:00 on that date, so the birth time becomes 1990-08-24 09:30 UTC and the Julian Day is 2448127.89583. At longitude 67.0011° east, the local sidereal time is 181.906° (12.127 hours). With an obliquity of 23.441° and a latitude of 24.8607° north, the Ascendant works out at 261.251°, which is 21°15′ Sagittarius in the tropical zodiac. In the sidereal zodiac the same Ascendant is 27°31′ Scorpio.
The table below is what the tool shows for this example, and it makes the point about birth time clearly:
| Birth time (local) | Difference | Ascendant |
|---|---|---|
| 13:30 | −60 min | 8°01′ Sagittarius |
| 14:00 | −30 min | 14°36′ Sagittarius |
| 14:30 | as entered | 21°15′ Sagittarius |
| 15:00 | +30 min | 28°01′ Sagittarius |
| 15:30 | +60 min | 4°57′ Capricorn |
A one-hour error is enough to move this birth from Sagittarius to Capricorn. Another birth with the same date and place might be much more stable, so it is worth checking your own case.

Rising sign vs Sun sign vs Moon sign
The Sun sign is set by your birth date, the Moon sign by the Moon’s position at birth, and the Rising sign by the horizon at your birth time and place. Many astrologers describe the Sun as core identity, the Moon as emotional habits and the Rising sign as outward style, though traditions vary. To complete the set, use the Moon Sign Calculator, and see Birth Chart Basics for how all three fit in a chart.
Finding your birth time and coordinates
The most reliable birth time comes from a birth certificate or hospital record. Parents and older relatives sometimes remember a time, though memories tend to round to the hour. For coordinates, the city list covers many large places. For any other town, search for it in an online map, then copy the latitude and longitude, remembering that west of Greenwich and south of the equator are negative. Within a city, the difference between neighbourhoods is tiny and almost never changes the sign.
Common mistakes and limitations
- Guessing the birth time: a guess can produce a confident-looking but wrong Rising sign. Use the sensitivity table to see how fragile your result is.
- Wrong longitude sign: places west of Greenwich, such as the Americas, have negative longitudes.
- Using the wrong time zone: daylight saving and historical changes can shift your birth time by an hour or more.
- Expecting all websites to agree: tropical vs sidereal gives different signs, and rounding in birth time moves the degree.
- Extreme latitudes: beyond about 66° the Ascendant changes very quickly and some house systems break down.
- Treating it as a prediction: the horizon geometry is astronomy; the meaning is interpretation.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my Rising sign?
Enter your date, exact birth time, birthplace and time zone in the calculator above. The tool works out the sidereal time at your birthplace and then finds the point of the zodiac that was crossing the eastern horizon, which is your Ascendant.
What is my rising sign if I do not know my birth time?
It cannot be worked out reliably. The Rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so without a birth time any answer would be a guess. This calculator asks for a time and does not fabricate one. A birth certificate or hospital record is the usual source.
Are the Rising sign and the Ascendant the same thing?
Yes. “Rising sign” is the everyday name and “Ascendant” is the technical one; both mean the zodiac sign on the eastern horizon at birth. This tool also shows the Descendant and Midheaven for reference.
Why does birthplace matter for the Rising sign?
The horizon is different at every place on Earth. Latitude changes how fast each sign rises, and longitude changes the local sidereal time. Two people born at the same instant in different cities can have different Rising signs.
How accurate is this rising sign calculator?
The Ascendant is calculated with the standard formula from local sidereal time, the obliquity of the ecliptic and your latitude. We checked results against an independent astronomy library, and they agreed to within a few hundredths of a degree. The real uncertainty usually comes from the birth time, which is why a sensitivity table is shown.
Why is my Vedic Lagna different from my Western Rising sign?
Lagna is the Vedic name for the Ascendant. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which sits about 24° behind the tropical one, so the Lagna is often the previous sign. Use the zodiac system selector to compare both.
How exact does my birth time need to be?
The Ascendant moves about 1° every four minutes on average, and a sign is 30° wide. A time that is off by 10 to 15 minutes only matters when you are near a boundary. The table under your result shows what happens at 30 and 60 minutes either side.
Is my birth data saved?
The calculation runs in your browser and your birth details are not sent to the server by this tool. Ordinary hosting logs and other website technologies may work separately; see the Privacy Policy.
