Astrology through your birth moment
Moon Sign Calculator
Use this free moon sign calculator to find the zodiac sign the Moon was in when you were born. Unlike a quick birth-date lookup, this moon sign calculator uses your birth time and time zone, because the Moon changes sign about every two and a half days. It shows the working, offers Western and Vedic zodiacs and tells you when the answer is too close to call.

How this was calculated
How to use the Moon Sign Calculator
- Enter your date of birth.
- Enter your birth time on a 24-hour clock, for example 14:30. If you do not know it, tick the box and the tool will check the whole day.
- Choose the time zone that applied at your birthplace on your birth date. If it is not listed, pick “Other” and type the UTC offset.
- Choose Tropical for Western astrology or Sidereal for Vedic astrology (Chandra Rashi).
- Select Find my Moon sign and read the result together with the working underneath it.
What is a Moon sign?
Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was travelling through at the moment you were born. If you have ever asked “what is my Moon sign?”, this is what astrologers mean. In astrology the Moon is traditionally connected with feelings, habits, comfort and the way a person reacts when they are not thinking about it, while the Sun sign is associated with identity and the Rising sign with outward manner.
Because the Moon moves about 13° a day, it spends only two to three days in each sign. That is why a Moon sign calculator needs more than the birth year, and why a date-only lookup from a table can occasionally be wrong. The astronomy is exact enough to calculate; the meaning of the result is a symbolic tradition, not a scientifically established description of personality.
Method and formula used
SOULTRIANGLE calculates the Moon’s geocentric ecliptic longitude directly, rather than looking it up in a pre-made table. The steps are listed below so you can check them.
Step 1: Convert your local birth time to UTC using the time zone you selected, including daylight saving rules in force on that date.
Step 2: Convert UTC to a Julian Day number and then to Julian centuries from the year 2000.
Step 3: Compute the Moon’s mean longitude and its four orbital arguments, then add the 60 largest periodic corrections for longitude from Jean Meeus’s Astronomical Algorithms, plus a small nutation correction.
Step 4: Divide the longitude by 30° to find the sign (0–30° is Aries, 30–60° is Taurus, and so on). For the sidereal option, subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa first.
The tool treats Universal Time as the same as Terrestrial Time. The difference is about one minute for modern dates and moves the Moon by less than 0.04°. It also reports the Moon as seen from the centre of the Earth, not from your exact location. Both simplifications are far smaller than the width of a sign.
Worked example: 24 August 1990, 14:30 in Karachi
Karachi used UTC+05:00 on that date, so 14:30 local time becomes 1990-08-24 09:30 UTC. That gives a Julian Day of 2448127.89583. The Moon’s tropical longitude comes out at 197.463°, which is 17°27′ Libra. With the sidereal option the Lahiri ayanamsa (23.722°) is subtracted, giving 173.741° or 23°44′ Virgo.
The same birth therefore has a Libra Moon in Western astrology and a Virgo Moon in Vedic astrology. Neither result is a mistake; they answer slightly different questions about where the zodiac starts.
Moon sign meanings: a reflection guide

- Virgo Moon: practical, detail-minded coping. When does self-criticism help?
- Libra Moon: harmony and fairness. Do you say what you prefer?
- Scorpio Moon: intense, private feeling. What do you choose to share?
- Sagittarius Moon: optimism and a need for space. How do you balance freedom and commitment?
- Capricorn Moon: reserve and duty. When is it fine to ask for help?
- Aquarius Moon: independence and distance. How do you stay close to feelings you analyse?
- Pisces Moon: sensitivity and imagination. How do you protect your energy?
Moon sign vs Sun sign vs Rising sign
Your Sun sign comes from your birth date alone and changes roughly once a month. Your Moon sign changes every couple of days and needs the time of birth to be certain. Your Rising sign changes about every two hours and needs both birth time and birthplace. Together they are often called the “big three” of a birth chart. If you want the third, try the Rising Sign Calculator, or read Birth Chart Basics to see how the three fit into the whole chart.
Tropical and sidereal Moon signs
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which starts at the March equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is anchored to the stars. The gap between them is the ayanamsa, about 24° today, so a Moon that is early in one sign in the tropical system is usually in the previous sign in the sidereal one. This calculator offers the Lahiri ayanamsa, the one most widely used in India. Other ayanamsas exist and shift the result by a fraction of a degree, which matters only near a boundary.
Why birth time and time zone matter
A one-hour mistake moves the Moon by about half a degree, which rarely changes the sign. A mistake of a whole day can. The bigger risk is the time zone: using the wrong offset, or forgetting that a place had daylight saving time on your birth date, shifts the calculation by an hour or more. Birth certificates, hospital records and family documents are the best sources. If your time is approximate, treat any result within a degree of a boundary as uncertain.
Common mistakes and limitations
- Using today’s time zone rules: countries have changed their offsets and daylight saving dates. Choose the zone that applied when you were born.
- Mixing 12-hour and 24-hour time: 2:30 in the afternoon is 14:30.
- Expecting every calculator to agree: tropical vs sidereal, and different ayanamsas, give different signs for the same birth.
- Ignoring boundary warnings: if the tool says your Moon is close to a sign edge, believe it.
- Treating the sign as a prediction: the position is astronomy; the meaning is interpretation. Do not use it for health, money, legal or relationship decisions.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my Moon sign?
Enter your date of birth, birth time and the time zone of your birthplace in the calculator above. It converts your local time to UTC, calculates the Moon’s position along the ecliptic and reports the zodiac sign that position falls in.
What is my Moon sign if I do not know my birth time?
The Moon changes sign about every two and a half days, so on many dates the sign is the same all day. Tick “I do not know my birth time” and the tool checks the whole calendar day. If the Moon changes sign that day, it tells you roughly when and shows both signs instead of guessing.
Is a Moon sign calculator by date of birth enough?
Sometimes, but not always. A date alone is enough only on days when the Moon stays in one sign from midnight to midnight. On a sign-change day the birth time decides, which is why a date-only lookup can occasionally be wrong.
Why is my Moon sign different in Vedic astrology?
Vedic (sidereal) astrology measures the zodiac from fixed stars, while Western (tropical) astrology measures from the March equinox. The two differ by the ayanamsa, currently about 24°, so the Moon often lands in the previous sign. The Vedic Moon sign is commonly called the Chandra Rashi. Use the zodiac system selector to compare.
How accurate is this Moon sign calculator?
The Moon’s longitude is calculated with a 60-term series from Jean Meeus’s Astronomical Algorithms. We checked it against the published worked example and an independent astronomy library; results agreed within about 0.02°. That is far smaller than a sign width of 30°, but results very close to a sign boundary can still flip with a small birth-time error.
Does my Moon sign change over time?
No. Your Moon sign is fixed by the position of the Moon at the moment of birth. What changes over a month is where the Moon is in the sky, which is what astrologers call transits.
Is my Moon sign more important than my Sun sign?
Astrologers do not agree on a ranking. In the tradition, the Sun is linked with identity and the Moon with emotional habits and needs. Both are symbolic descriptions, not measurements of personality.
Is my birth data saved?
